Course Overview

The New Zealand Discovery Programme is a 21-day immersive educational journey designed to introduce students to the unique cultural, environmental, and academic landscape of Aotearoa. Through a combination of classroom learning at leading institutions such as the University of Auckland, sustainability-focused exploration at Green School New Zealand, and residential immersion at St Peter’s School in Cambridge, students experience a holistic blend of academic enrichment and experiential learning. Alongside these structured learning experiences, students explore New Zealand’s breathtaking natural environments, discover iconic attractions like Hobbiton, Mitai Māori Village, and the Agrodome, and develop independence, global awareness, and cultural understanding in one of the world’s safest and most scenic destinations.

What You Will Learn

Over the course of the programme, students develop a multifaceted understanding of sustainability, cultural diversity, and New Zealand’s rich natural heritage. They gain firsthand insight into Māori culture, explore eco-living through guided projects, and strengthen their confidence in English through academic and social engagement. Students also learn practical skills from farm experiences and sustainability workshops, all while developing creativity, critical thinking, and adaptability in a supportive and globally oriented environment.

Learning Objectives

The programme aims to help students deepen their understanding of New Zealand’s culture, history, and indigenous Māori traditions while strengthening their global communication skills through consistent interaction in English-speaking environments. Students are encouraged to apply sustainability principles introduced by Green School New Zealand, enhance their collaboration and problem-solving abilities during team-based activities, and cultivate a mindset of global citizenship as they navigate new settings, interact with local students, and reflect on their personal growth. By the end of the journey, participants gain confidence, adaptability, and a heightened appreciation of international perspectives.

Key Concepts

The New Zealand Discovery Programme is anchored in several core concepts, including sustainability and green living, where students explore how renewable energy, eco-architecture, and environmental stewardship shape New Zealand’s national identity. Experiential learning lies at the programme’s heart, encouraging students to acquire knowledge through hands-on, inquiry-based activities embedded within real-world contexts. Cultural immersion is integrated throughout the journey, introducing students to Māori traditions, local communities, and New Zealand’s innovative approach to holistic education. Together, these concepts build a foundation for global citizenship, leadership, and 21st-century competencies.

Activities

Throughout the programme, students participate in a wide variety of academic, cultural, and outdoor activities designed to enrich their understanding and broaden their perspectives. They attend classes at the University of Auckland, experience a full day of sustainability-focused learning at Green School New Zealand, and live on campus at St Peter’s School Cambridge, where they take part in school life and connect with local students. Beyond academics, students embark on captivating excursions including guided tours of the Hobbiton Movie Set, cultural immersion at Mitai Māori Village, and interactive learning at the Agrodome Farm. Daily life is equally enriching, with opportunities to experience communal living at youth hostels, participate in group discussions, and enjoy New Zealand’s remarkable natural landscapes.

Outcome

By completing the New Zealand Discovery Programme, students emerge with a deeper cultural understanding, improved communication and interpersonal skills, and a strong awareness of environmental sustainability and global responsibility. The experience enhances their independence through residential living, sharpens their ability to work collaboratively in multicultural settings, and strengthens their appreciation for inquiry-based and experiential learning. Overall, students return home not only with new friendships and unforgettable memories but with broadened perspectives and increased readiness to engage confidently in international contexts.

Certificates, Recommendation
Letter and Report Samples

Upon completing the programme, students receive a certificate of participation, a detailed education report highlighting their learning progress and achievements, and a sample recommendation letter. These documents recognize their skills, growth, and engagement, providing valuable records for future academic or professional pursuits.
